Steve

“Hurry up, man. It’s freezing!” Steve jogged in place, wondering if he could get April to warm him back up when they got inside. Willie messed with the lock, struggling to get the key in. This morning had been awkward. He couldn’t tell, when they were in the kitchen, if she had wanted him to do something. Part of him wondered if she didn’t remember what she had said to him. Part of him wondered if she had heard what he had said. He was angry with himself for chickening out like that.

Willie’s screams pulled him from his thoughts. Willie sprinted past him and Steve looked into the garage. The girl they had been looking for hung upside down from the rafters of the garage. She was looking at him, her mouth twisted in a shriek. Blood covered most of her face, showing only her beautiful brown eyes. They were glassy but still held a look of horror. Someone had hung her up by her ankles. Her throat had been slit open and so had her wrists. And from her left hand, she was missing two fingers: her pinky and her ring. Steve couldn’t tear his eyes away. He was rooted to the spot.

He heard the door slam, snapping him out of his trance. Turning, he saw April running down the steps toward him.

“No, April!” Steve grabbed her, stopping her. “Go inside! I don’t want you to see this!” Steve tried to block her, but she looked right at the garage and saw Mel. April screamed.

“Go back inside.” Steve putting his body in front of her. She looked up at him. He couldn’t look at her. He felt like he would lose his breakfast.

“I just wanted to make sure you were okay,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around him.

“I know. Let’s go back inside.” Steve took her hand, and they walked away from the garage. He thought about going back, closing the doors, giving Mel some privacy. But he couldn’t bring himself to.

Willie had stopped Zach from going outside.

“You don’t want to see her like that, man,” Willie was saying. Zach looked from April to Steve. Steve shook his head, April trembling next to him, staring at the floor. Zach backed up, tears filling his eyes, and he crumpled to the couch.

“Police are on their way. It could take a while. The storm,” Charlotte whispered to Steve. “Are you guys okay?”

All Steve could see was the blood pool and the pale skin. April didn’t answer either. She dropped his hand and headed toward the restroom. Steve followed and heard her throwing up. He should have tried to stop her sooner. Why had she come out? He opened the door and went in, kneeling next to her. She was against the wall, eyes squeezed shut.

“I’m sorry, April.” She opened her eyes. They brimmed with tears while she searched his face. She reached out and took his hand.

“I’m sorry too.” He wasn’t sure why they were apologizing, but there were no other words in that moment.
